We could indicate you the hard factory reset right from the start and it would spare you from literally everything – no need to worry about iTunes or iCloud accounts, no need to try and restore any previous backup and so on. But it would also spare you from getting your personal data back. If you couldn’t care less about what you had on the iPhone prior to this password not working problem, you’re a lucky person.

On the other hand, if you’re scared that you might lose valuable personal information, let us show you a few other options. Maybe you haven’t noticed, but we already mentioned the main alternatives, right when we said the nasty, r-word. Long story short, aside from the reset, you can try these solutions when you can’t unlock using password or pin on iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max or iPhone Xr:

  1. The iTunes option to bypass the password
  2. The iCloud option to bypass the password
  3. The Recovery Mode option to bypass the password

Whether any of these will work or not is closely related to whether you have ever used the iTunes and/or the iCloud before. If you did, chances are you have a backup in place and, since you can access your account, you should also be able to restore that version of backup.

First, check the iTunes app

  1. From any device where you’ve used the iTunes and synced your iPhone, launch the app and use your credentials to log in;
  2. Wait for the iTunes to run a new sync and create a backup of the information contained on your currently locked iPhone;
  3. Then, you can move on to restoring the device from the option Restore [iPhone name];
  4. You’ll get to the Set Up Screen, on the iPhone;
  5. You must select Restore from iTunes backup;
  6. You must select your iPhone from the iTunes app and wait for the restore process to finish.

Second, try the iCloud service

  1. From any device where you can use the internet, access the page com/find;
  2. Use your Apple ID to sign in, when prompted;
  3. Select All Devices, followed by your iPhone listed in there;
  4. Tap on the option labeled as Erase [iPhone name] to get rid of this device and its forgotten password;
  5. Then, select one of the two options you’ll see in there: Set Up As New or Restore From A Backup.

Notethis iCloud option for can’t unlock using password or pin on iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, iPhone Xr Will only work if the device that you currently cannot access still has an active internet connection!

Third, boot into Recovery Mode

  1. Connect your iPhone to a computer and start the iTunes;
  2. Use the hard keys to force restart the iPhone – tap and hold the Home and Sleep buttons, for 10 seconds at least, until the Apple logo appears and only let go of it when the Recovery Mode screen was loaded;
  3. When you’re in the Recovery Mode, select the Update option;
  4. Wait until the iTunes downloads the latest iOS software version and overwrites the old one, just the iOS, not your personal stored data!

Notethis Recovery Mode option is the only thing you can try, aside from the hard factory reset, when the iTunes and the iCloud methods can’t help with the can’t unlock using password or pin on iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max or iPhone Xr.

If you are not sure how to handle any of these options, you can ask for professional help instead of just rushing into deleting all the data. Now that you know your options, finding someone to help you shouldn’t be that difficult!
