How To Exit Group Text On iPhone X/iPhone Xr/iPhone Xs/iPhone Xs Max

If you’ve been using your iPhone X, iPhone Xr, iPhone Xs or iPhone Xs Max for some time, you must already be a part of several different group chats. The first time you consider the option of leaving a group text, however, you might be a bit insecure. Should you leave or should you stay?

But when you decide for leaving, you might also end up asking yourself – can I leave or can’t I? That’s right, just because you can enter whatever group text you want, whenever you want, regardless if it’s a mixed (iMessage and SMS) or straight (iMessage alone or SMS alone) group, it doesn’t mean that leaving it will be just as easy. As a matter of fact, in some instances, it can be impossible.

You are probably outraged now, that you just found out. To help you clear your mind and get you to know your perspectives, let us make the essential clear:

You can only exit a group text on iPhone X, iPhone Xr, iPhone Xs or iPhone Xs Max if the group is exclusively composed of iMessage members!

Naturally, your next question(s) will be: How about the mixed groups? Why can’t I leave those ones? Will I be forever stuck in it? Is there any other option left for me?

Let’s treat each of the two main situations from above separately…

iMessage alone group chats – how can you leave one from iPhone X, iPhone Xr, iPhone Xs or iPhone Xs Max?

As already mentioned, if it’s not a mixed group, you can leave it without any issues. Just think twice about it because, once you leave it, there’s no coming back. The notifications will stop, but you will never get the chance to return to it. If you have made up your mind, all you need to do is to:

  1. Open up that particular group message;
  2. Go at the top-right corner;
  3. Select the Details option;
  4. Identify the Leave this Conversation button;
  5. Tap on it and you are officially out of that group chat.

Is the button grayed out instead of red? It means that the option is not active. And the only reason we can think of is that the group is actually a mixed one… In this particular case, you have the option from below to exit group chat on iPhone Xr, iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max or iPhone X.

iMessage & SMS group chats – what can you do about it?

As an Apple user, you have the right to want to get rid of certain notifications. And this is the only principle that applies in this particular case. With mixed iMessage & SMS group chats, you cannot leave, but you can stop getting notifications. The solution is a so-called Do Not Disturb feature. Once you turn that one on, and you have the Do Not Disturb status within the group text, you’ll be a part of it without the annoying notification system.

This means that you can text within that group anytime you want. And you can check the conversation history in there whenever you want. But it will all be a silent process – if you want to check it, you have to manually open it and scroll through the group chat; and if you don’t, you won’t even recall that you’re still a member.

If you like the sound of it, go to the Messages app and hit the Details button of that particular chat group. Select the Do Not Disturb option and turn on this feature. All these considered, you’re ready to exit group text on iPhone X, iPhone Xr, iPhone Xs or iPhone Xs Max in any possible situation!
