Instagram has recently introduced a new feature that could change the way that people use Instagram all together. Now you can follow hashtags and have them appear on your main feed. These hashtags will be like following friends in some way and you’ll also be able to unfollow hashtags just the same you can do with friends.
In the past, you’d need to go to the Discover page and enter a hashtag like #tech, #apple or #food to view pictures with that hashtag. But now you can easily just follow a specific hashtag by selecting the button at the top of the page. You can view the picture provided below to get an example of how it works:
Once you follow specific hashtags, both the people you follow the hashtags will show in your feed together. There’s a good change that the Instagram algorithm won’t show every specific picture of the hashtag you follow as this will be overwhelming.
There’s a few things that Instagram users should be worried about and that’s that other people can see which “hashtags” you follow, just like they can view which “people” or “pages” you currently follow. It’s important to note that if you make your Instagram profile private, only the people that follow you can see what “hashtags” you’re following.
You can check out the picture below to see how it will look from the perspective of your followers when you follow specific hashtags:
This new feature for following hashtags can really change that people use Instagram all together. Technically, an Instagram user would be able to not follow any page or person entirely and only follow hashtags. This might reduce the importance on the overall number of followers that a specific page has and make the value of a like a comment much higher than before.
