During the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 announcement that has occurred recently, Samsung took the opportunity to brag about the idea that the new device will be “YouTube’s Signature Device” for the upcoming year. For those of you that are unaware of what that means, you do not need to be alarmed. This is because YouTube just recently launched its’ brand new program that they feel will be important. The Device Report that YouTube recommends is what smartphones will give the user the best experience. They call these lists of devices that are best compatible with YouTube “signature devices”. The benefits of using these devices while watching videos will range from support of a high dynamic range, 4K decoding, DRM reliable performance, next generation codes, a higher frame rate, and being able to watch videos in 360 degrees. Google has explained that their team looks into every device will work with companies to solve video capability issues and playback performance.

The Device Report will currently launch with about 18 devices with the Galaxy Note 9 being next the other smartphones that are popular such as the OnePlus 6, HTC U12 Plus, and Pixel 2 XL. Someone that has been highlighted by many people is that there was no iPhone on the list. However, this is understandable as Android, Google, and YouTube are all owned by the same company. Due to this, Apple’s software does not support the VP9 video code that was developed by Google. This is also the reason why people that use Safari are not able to watch videos that are in 4K.

With all this being said, people will not be looking to this list to help them with their decision of their next purchase, but it will be used for marketing purposes in the future.
